May 31 - The latest FIFA World Cup odds show that England is drifting in the betting market to win the 2006 World Cup in Germany. England were the undisputed second-favorites at all sportsbooks until Wayne Rooney fractured his foot. Now, with uncertainty over Rooney's status England's odds to win are on the rise.
Germany are now the second-favorites at a lot of online sportsbooks, but if we were bookmakers we'd lay 10/1 on the Germans winning as they have little chance. Historically, host nations do well but the Germans are lucky to get a soft draw in the Group phase. They will be very lucky to make it to the quarter-finals with their limited talent.
England's chances depend heavily on Rooney's fitness. His manager, renowned prat Sir Alex Ferguson, has already alienated everyone who didn't already despise him by whining to the press about how Rooney's Manchester United career should take precedence over his England World Cup campaign. He doesn't want Rooney rushed but the truth is that England have a slim chance of winning if he does play and no chance if he doesn't play.
Wayne Rooney remains doubtful for the group games, but our feeling is he will be included in the squad, and they will use him once they progress to the knock-out stages.
England are 8/1 at most online sportsbooks, with the exception of those that target UK clients. William Hill and Victor Chandler trade England at 13/2, a huge difference. If you want to bet on England don't go to one of the big English bookies, because you're losing a potential fortune there.
Argentina are finding some betting support and their odds to win the World Cup in 2006 are identical to England's at most online 'books.
