The South African government have frustrated the South African gambling
industry for years and provincial governments have lost our on potential tax
revenues.
The South African Trade and industry deputy director-general, Astrid Ludin, told the
local Business Day newspaper
that the bill proposes a system that would regulate players and online gambling
sites, but that taxation still needs to be defined, as is the casino in the UK.
Online gambling in South Africa has been illegal as per the the National Gambling
Act of 2004. At the time, the government felt that "more research was needed
into the regulatory frameworks of markets in the UK, the US and Australia"
The Trade and Industry Minister had two years to draft new regulations to
regulate online gambling.
The actual legislation will be interesting but one feels that South Africa
has all but missed the boat when it comes the licensing offshore gambling sites.
