June 21 - Italy were short-priced favorites for their game yesterday against the minnows from New Zealand, but Spain make those odds look downright generous as they are as short as 1.14 to win against Honduras. Italy failed to win of course in another huge World Cup betting upset, just one of many from the first round action to date.
Spain were expected by many dim handicapping "experts" to win it all in South Africa, but they were on the receiving end of the biggest upset to date when Switzerland took all three points away in their opening match against the prohibitive betting favorites.
Coming off that 0-1 loss the Spanish know that they have to win today's game against an unheralded line up from Honduras. The latter played fairly well against Chile but were outclassed and lucky to lose by only a single goal.
Betting exchanges make Spain 1/7 to win while Honduras are an astonishing 35/1 outsiders in a three-horse race. Even the Draw is a massive price at 9/1.
In the other games on today's World Cup betting card Portugal face North Korea while Chile and Switzerland play one another. The winner of that game would be in pole position to qualify for a spot in the last 16, although one can envisage a scenario where three teams end up on 6 points each (Switzerland, Chile, and Spain).
Our predictions are for Portugal to win but by a narrow margin, and for Chile to defeat Switzerland by a comfortable margin of at least 2 goals. Asian handicap betting beckons for both these games!
