September 7 - It's another dark day for online gambling in general and online sports betting in particular with the news that the chairman of Sportingbet Plc, Peter Dicks, was detained last night during a visit to the United States.
No details of the arrest have been made public but it looks like further evidence that the US authorities intend to go after online sports betting companies that also accept bets over the phone.
Even though these phone calls are made to countries outside the United States, the Department Of Justice contends that they violate the Wire Act, and hence that companies that permit this are breaking the law.
News of the arrest comes on the same day that millions of Americans prepare to start betting on the new NFL season. The regular season kicks off tonight with the Steelers hosting the Dolphins, and betting on the NFL will be big business as usual.
Online gambling stocks were battered in trading on various European exchanges today in an unsurprising reaction to the bad news.
This arrest now shows that the BetOnSports drama, where then CEO David Carruthers was arrested while in transit in the United States was not an isolated incident and that all CEO's of the big online sports betting operations could suffer the same consequences if they travel there.
Calvin Ayre will not be returning to LA to buy another Maserati any time soon - that's one thing we'd be happy to bet on right now.
