Sunderland Given 5-1 Hiding in English Premier League - 11-01-10

November 1 - This weekend in the English Premier League many derbies took place including the highly anticipated match between fierce rivals Newcastle and Sunderland, which saw the latter trounced 5-1.

Perhaps it was no coincidence that Sunday's showdown between Newcastle and Sunderland took place on Halloween, because Newcastle played like vampire slayers compared to the zombie-like Sunderland.

From the whistle ,Newcastle made it clear they were out for blood and after 26 minutes opened the scoring with a superb goal from Newcastle captain and midfielder, Kevin Nolan, the first of his great hat trick.

The Magpies never looked back, keeping a disturbingly lack-luster Sunderland on their back foot. Nolan added Newcastle's second to the board, while a deadly penalty from striker Shola Ameobi made it 3-0.

Despite a presumably heated 'pep-talk' from Sunderland manager Steve Bruce at half time, his team fared little better in the second half. Only 8 minutes in, former Newcastle defender Titus Bramble was sent off, leaving his already struggling team with just 10 men.

But to the credit of the Black Cats, they managed to keep Newcastle at bay until 20 minutes from the final whistle, when Ameobi volleyed in his second goal of the match, his sixth career goal against Sunderland.

As grim-faced Sunderland fans watched their side being gutted by their biggest foes, Christmas had come early for Newcastle fans, who were watching one of their team's greatest performances in recent years.

And their final gift of the match came in the form of a third goal from Nolan to put Newcastle 5-0 up. It was only due to a cracking injury time effort from Sunderland striker Darren Bent, that the final score was 5-1.

Here are the complete English Premier Results from the weekend:

Newcastle 5-1 Sunderland
Bolton 0-1 Liverpool
Arsenal 1-0 West Ham Utd
Blackburn 1-2 Chelsea
Everton 1-0 Stoke City
