September 24 - Watch out 2008 Breeders' Cup Mile fans, one Mile entry Tamayuz - a talented colt - has been on fire this year and is getting set to take on some tough competition in Saturday's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1) at Ascot in England, whereafter he'll be winging his way to Santa Anita in California.
Owned by Dubai Deputy Ruler and Minister of Finance Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and trained by the formidable Frenchman Freddie Head, Tamayuz has time after time shown his true colors this year by delivering some impressive victories in a multitude of important French horse races.
These include a win in July in the 1 mile Abu Dhabi Sorouh Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1) in Chantilly France, when he crossed the line 1 1/2 lengths ahead of the talented Raven's Pass. In August Tamayuz scored another noteworthy victory, this time in the 1 mile August Jacques le Marois (Gr 1) at Deauville Racecourse.
In fact, Tamayuz has proved to be such a consistent performer that he is being compared to arguably the best miler in Europe, Henrythenavigator, and European horseracing fans are eager to see a showdown between the two mighty runners. The good news is that come Saturday they'll get their wish.
Both colts have been entered in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot along with ten other entries. Two of the UK's leading bookmakers have each chosen one of the colts as their odds on favorite. This just goes to show how close in form and talent Tamayuz and Henrythenavigator are perceived.
The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series which means the winner will win an automatic berth in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Mile in the United States on October 25th. However, regardless of the outcome at Ascot, Head has confirmed that Tamayuz will be at the starting gate at Santa Anita.
As for Henrythenavigator, although his highly-rated Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien had originally planned to enter him in the Breeders' Cup Classic, recent reports suggest that he will also likely run the colt in Breeders' Cup Mile. This means the two colts will face off again - only this time in front of their US fans.
