Last Season
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had an average season last year, finishing on
9-7. However, there were a couple of Buccaneers players that shined,
including wide receiver, Antonio Bryant, who caught 83 balls for 1,248
yards and made 7 touchdowns. The team ranked 14 in the NFL with its
total offense averaging 341 yards per game. The Buccaneers' defense was
solid, allowing slightly more than 300 yards per game. It ranked 9 in
the NFL, holding opponents to just 20 points per game. However, what the
Buccaneers lacked were more playmakers.
Off Season
In the off-season the Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-signed many of their
core players from last season, including safety, Jermaine Phillips and
wide receiver, Antonio Bryant. They also signed running back, Derrick
Ward - who racked up over 1,000 yards for the New York Giants last
season, and talented tight end, Kellen Winslow II, who missed 6 games
with the Cleveland Browns last season as a result of a knee injury. The
Buccaneers used the 2009 NFL Draft to secure promising Kansas 250 pound
6'6 quarterback, Josh Freeman, who could become a force to be reckoned
with, as well as swift Texas defensive tackle, Roy Miller.
2009 Preview
Going into 2009, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seem to have the right
players for the right positions, so there is no real reason why they
shouldn't have a solid season. Antonio Bryant is expected to shine again
this season along with Derrick Ward, who can be relied on to rack up
some solid numbers. But the key to the team's season may lie with
quarterback, Josh Freeman, who needs to deliver under center. The team's
other quarterbacks may still be lacking - Luke McCown has still not
honed his throws and Brian Griese throws too many interceptions.
Defensively, the team still needs a lot of work, which may not bode well
this season.
2009 Prediction
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers need to kick off the 2009 NFL season with a
bang and win some games early on, despite its grueling schedule. They
should be able to achieve this provided they sort out their
center/quarterback issues to make their offense as solid as possible to
make up for their poor defense. Without a decent offense, Tampa Bay
could be looking at a long and unpleasant road ahead.
**Our Pick This team finishes last in the South by a distance and endures a long and woeful season filled with losses - how's that for an opinionated pick?
