Last Season
Who can forget how the Tennessee Titans kicked off the 2008 NFL
season with a dazzling 10-0 start, thanks mostly to the talented trio of
veteran quarterback Kerry Collins and running backs Chris Johnson and
LenDale. Together they spearheaded one of the best running games of the
season. Collins threw 2,600 yards, made 12 touchdowns and racked up 7
interceptions. And the Titans' defense was not too shabby either,
holding their opponents to just 14.6 points per game. Unfortunately, the
Titans' luck ran out in the playoffs. Off Season
Unfortunately for the Tennessee Titans, they lost
arguably their best defensive player, Albert Haynesworth, to the
Washington Redskins in a deal worth a reported $100 million. So to
address the hole in the team's receiving core, in the 2009 NFL Draft the
Titans signed up talented former Pittsburgh wide out, Nate Washington, Rutgers standout
and no stranger to big plays, Kenny Britt, and strong South Carolina
tight end, Jared Cook. The Titans also secured the services of swift,
although injury-prone, Auburn defensive tackle, Sen'Derrick Marks, who
is expected to help fill the void left by Haynesworth.
2009 Preview
This season there is a great expectation for the Tennessee Titans to
play like they played last season, and even better. However, for that to
happen they have a lot of preparation to do. It's likely that the team
will put much stock in talented young running back Chris Johnson, who
has the potential of becoming one of the best running backs in the NFL.
To be a successful team this season, the Titans also need for their
receivers to become a solid and cohesive unit. And in terms of defense,
if the Titans can keep it together and as tight as it was when Haynesworth
was around, it has a good chance of making it to the playoffs.
2009 Prediction
The Tennessee Titans wouldn't have been pleased when they received
their 2009 schedule and discovered that they have to face 2008 NFL Super
Bowl Champs, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in week 1, and then go on to play
the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts in the next 5 weeks of the season.
Many feel that given this solid competition, the Titans will struggle
this season. However, if they can keep their heads down and start off
the season with a few key wins, they may just be able to pull off
another trip to the playoffs. Our Pick Titans offer little betting value as they tend to play games very close when they do win, so laying points is hardly ever a smart play. This year might see them regress a bit so there could be some upside to fading them. They could well miss the postseason this year.
