The Online Gambling Power Players

July 18 - eGaming Review, a leading online gambling publication, ranks the top 50 online gambling groups each year. In its latest release of it's annual Power 50 ratings, there are some obvious movers and a few surprises. Sportingbet PLC, the UK based bookmaker and Gaming Group, keeps its position as the largest and most influencial online gambling group, which is hardly surprising following two years of acquisitions...

The eGaming Review Power 50 are assessed based on a number of factors such as scale, reach, influence and product diversity. It is interesting that a there seems to be more of a focus on the influence that a company has on the industry as a whole, as opposed to sheer size.

There have been some significant gains in position, some groups have lost ground, whilst some new players have entered this prestigious list for the first time.

Among the biggest gains are:

  • PartyGaming (an obvious one), which with its recent listing and the growth of PartyPoker, it has jumped from position 5 to position 2. 2005 was a huge year for the group, with Net profits posted as US$371.
  • Bodog.com, this impressive operation is pushing the boundaries in the offshore sportsbook market. Bodog.com has raised its profile over the last year with some risky marketing tactics but its obviously paying off.
  • The biggest gain was made by eWorld Holdings, the owners of Ultimatebet Poker, which jumped from 47 to position 27.

Amongst the losers were:

  • Virgin Games, the British skill games group has dropped from 24 to 39.
  • Bet365, the UK based global gambling operator has dropped from position 23 to 32.

There are also some very interesting new entrants, most notably:

  • Fun Technologies, a skill based gaming company, entered the list at position 26.
  • Fortune Lounge, a casino and poker group, has entered the list at position 29. It's poker room, Royal Vegas Poker, has shown enormous growth and is now the largest Microgaming Prima Poker Room.
