The Turks Take On Online Casinos - 01-08-2007

January 8 - It has been reported that the Turkish authorities have decided to apply a controversial law against online crime to online casinos and online gambling. Penal Code Article 301 will be applied harshly according to leading Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak.

This law will allow the Technology Security Agency to block any sites that it deems to be illegal and indecent for its citizens. Once again government authorities have decided to censor the Internet according to the newspaper report. The citizens of Turkey are not responsible enough to make their own decisions with regards to enjoying a few games of blackjack or a spin at the roulette table. A law meant to combat child abuse, indecent broadcasts, and the like has been stretched to obstruct other broadcasts.

Yet again the onus will be placed on ISP's to block offending sites, in addition, legal action will be initiated against the owners of offending sites if they can be reached. Yip that's going to work, LOL.

"Denigrating Turkishness, the Republic and the institutions and organs of the state", is what the controversial code punishes. The punishments are over the top, with Orhan Pamuk, a free thinking Nobel Prize winner, being prosecuted for his opinions.

Hopefully the Turkish authorities will get some sense and do an about turn like the Italians. People love to gamble, the Internet is here to stay. Stop telling us what we can and can't do online. We can make our own decisions!
