August 23 - This weekend in the UK, three English Premier League clubs were flying high after drubbing their opponents 6-0 each, the victors being Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle, the losers being Blackpool, Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa respectively.
Such high scorelines - especially for the losers - are worrying, because they underline the enormous difference between the bigger, greater funded teams and the smaller, underfunded teams. And while this will always be the case in any top tier professional football league in the world, football fans want to know that the underdogs at least have some chance of winning games.
In Saturday's match between Arsenal and Blackpool, The Gunners did what they do best - they pounced on just about every error made by the seemingly intimidated Premier League newbies, Blackpool, and turned most of them to their own advantage.
That's how Arsenal's Theo Walcott found himself with a chance to open the scoring in the 13th minute. During the match, he earned himself a hat-trick. And while Blackpool had an opportunity or two to score, their obvious inexperience in the top-flight showed.
Chelsea, meanwhile, gave Wigan Athletic an identical hiding on Saturday, cementing their return to the top of the English Premier Standings after just two weeks of the new season with 6 points. In the Blues first match of the season against West Bromwich, they also walked off the field 6-0 victors at the full time whistle.
Unlike Arsenal, it took Chelsea until the 34th minute to draw blood thanks to a superb goal by Frenchman Florent Malouda, but then the floodgates were opened, and at the final whistle, a red-faced and humiliated WBA couldn't wait to escape the pitch.
On Sunday, Newcastle achieved the hat-trick of 6-0 defeats, their victims being the hapless Aston Villa. While it is perhaps understandable how English Premier League 'virgins' Blackpool crumbled to the last season's third best team, and how last season's champions bullied their way past weak Wigan, there is no excuse for how Aston Villa failed to fare against Newcastle.
Aston Villa finished sixth in the English Premier League last season while Newcastle was still playing in the First Division. During the game, Aston Villa seemed to stumble around while Newcastle played with exactly the kind of strategy and vigor missing from the England national football squad in the recent 2010 World Cup. The player that shined the brightest was Newcastle striker Andy Carroll, who achieved a hat-trick. Talk about a comeback.
