January 8 - The Times in the UK reports that more and more women are
getting involved in online poker and live poker as a hobby, in what has
traditionally been a male dominated domain...
One example cited is one JoJo Hastie organizes, who is a charity event and
private function organizer. At night she plays poker. This is in stark contrast
to the image of poker that used to be that of fat men chomping on cigars around
smoky tables. Female numbers in poker have sky rocketed in the last year.
They are playing online, but they are starting to play more and more live
poker. In Chelsea London, a recent tournament attracted 30 professional ladies
who play NL Hold'em.
Ms Hastie, learnt poker from her boyfriend a few months ago, and played in
her first live tournament a few weeks ago. She came third and won £250.
"Many of my friend now also play and it has become a social event for us".
Another player at the Chelsea tournament was Mary Caldecott-Smith, 34, who
runs a gardening club. She said: "There are no men here and it is so relaxing."
Women seemed to agree that playing without men is more relaxing and a lot
more fun.
Ed: I doubt that men want men only tournaments any longer. Judged by their
drooling around the poker table when there is a bit of cleavage around, I can't
see many calls for guy only tournaments!
