June 14 - A petition was handed to the US government by a conglomerate
of 28 US states for the right to retain control of online gambling legislation,
following the recent ruling by the World Trade Organization. The ruling
determined that the US was in contravention of global trade rules by restricting
access to Antiguan online gambling sites.
The ruling did however offer the US a an opening to continue its opposition
if it retracted all its existing online gambling legislation.
Needless to say this has caused a frenzy at state level with concerns that
senate will overrule existing legislation.
Attorney Generals from 28 states have appealed to the US trade representative
involved with the Antigua case to to take a stand for the rights of individual
states to make their own laws.
"Antigua has no business trying to rewrite our online gambling laws,"” Utah's
Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, said.
The 28 states include Nevada, which has existing online gambling legislation,
and also Oregon, which has recently made some noises about looking into
regulated online gambling.
