Last Season
Last season the Washington Redskins got off to a good start with 4
wins in their first 5 games. However, like many other NFL teams last
year, midway through the season the Redskins took their eye off the ball
and lost focus in winning games. In direct contradiction to the way the
team started the season, Washington lost 4 out of their last 5 games to
end the season on a lack-luster 8-8. Blame for the result has been
attributed to Redskins' quarterback, Jason Campbell, and offense in
general, considering its defense was one of the best in the league (#4).
Off Season
The Washington Redskins must have looked to the 2009 NFL Draft to help
shore up their crumbling offense. So it was ironic then that one of the
team's first selections was for 'explosive' Texas defensive end, Brian Orakpo,
a top player the Redskins could not pass up. They also snagged hefty
cornerback, Kevin Barnes, who suffered from a broken shoulder blade in
2008. But the biggest coup for the Redskins was the signing of defensive
tackle, Albert Haynesworth, in a 7-year, $100 million deal. He is widely
considered 'the most dominant defensive tackle in the NFL'. The Redskins
also signed ex-Indianapolis Colts punter, Hunter Smith.
2009 Preview
The Washington Redskins defense is very close to being the best in the
NFL, and its recent off-season selections should go a long way to help
the team become # 1 in the league defensively. Fans will be eager to see
what the dynamic duo of Albert Haynesworth and Brian Orakpo will bring
to the team's defense. But while the Redskins may be gloating
defensively, the big question is whether the team's offense is up to the
task of making touchdowns this season. Jason Campbell needs to up his
game dramatically and work on getting the ball out far more often and
effectively to receivers Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, and Chris
Cooley.
2009 Prediction
Luckily for the Washington Redskins, their first three games this
season include two games against the NFC's worst teams -
the Saint Louis Rams and the Detroit Lions. Even
the next team on Washington's schedule, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, should
put the team 3-1 ahead early on (assuming they lose at the Giants in Week 1, which is a pretty good assumption). However, after those games, the
competition will get much tougher and will no doubt test the team's
defense and put major pressure on its offense.
**Our Pick Play the UNDER in games featuring the Redskins until the oddsmakers wise up to the fact that this team is all defense and zero offense. When the regular season ends you can find all your Redskins players on the golf course, as usual.
