February 10 - The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, was recorded during a wiretap talking to the head of an illicit gambling ring that took in over $1.7 million in sports bets recently. The conversation was about Gretky's wife who bet over $100,000 on NFL games.
The gambling ring has now been busted by the Feds, and is apparently linked to organized crime in Philly. How charming. Gretzky, who coaches a bad NHL team that loses with clockwork regularity, the Coyotes, is not implicated in sports betting at this stage.
Instead it looks like he was talking to the bookies in an attempt to make sure that his wife's name was not dragged through the mud. Well the US sports media now has the story firmly between their pointy teeth, so good luck with that plan!
Allegations of gambling in the NHL are rife at the moment, but thankfully no one really cares about Ice Hockey anymore so they're basically immune from a scandal as a league. Sports betting action on ice hockey has declined in recent years according to several prominent online sportsbooks, and sports handicapping services like Mycapper.com rarely offer picks on it these days.
It boggles the mind that Gretzky's wife didn't choose to bet on sports online, where it is safe, regulated, and legal because the transaction takes place in a different country that doesn't have draconian sports betting laws. Instead she chose to bet with the Mafia, so who can really have any sympathy for her?
