February 28 - On paper Liverpool - who are sixth in the English Premier League standings - should have beaten 18th ranked West Ham United on Sunday, but instead the struggling Reds left Upton Park tails firmly between their legs after losing 3-1.
From the outset of the match an incredible thing happened. West Ham United, who have had a pretty average season to say the least, went on to deliver one of their finest performances of the season, while Liverpool proceeded to deliver one of their worst.
From the get go West Ham United were not afraid to attack their supposedly superior rivals. For example, in his English Premier League debut, German midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger blasted a huge although unsuccessful 40-yard shot at the Reds goal.
But it was in the 21st minute that West Ham Utd's fans had something to cheer about, when central midfielder Scott Parker got close enough to Liverpool's goal to skillfully curl one in, and put his side 1-0 in the lead, to the delight of coach Avram Grant.
And just moments before the half-time whistle, West Ham doubled up thanks to French striker Demba Ba who, unmarked in front of Liverpool's goal, got his head to a cross from right winger Gary O'Neil, nodding it home to give West Ham the 2-0 lead.
After receiving what was presumably a severe tongue-lashing from manager Kenny Dalglish at half-time, a seemingly different Liverpool emerged in the second half, one more capable of fending off West Ham's attacks, although one still struggling to score.
That is up until the 84th minute, when thanks to pressure on the home side, Liverpool's Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez crossed to full back Glen Johnson, who finding himself in front of West Ham's unguarded net, tapped in Liverpool's first goal of the match.
But if the Reds thought they could equalize before the final whistle, they were sorely mistaken when West Ham substitute Carlton Cole scored the third and final goal of the game for the home team in the 90th minute, to the utter delight of West Ham fans.
Here are the complete English Premier League results from the weekend:
West Ham Utd 3-1 Liverpool
Manchester City 1-1 Fulham
