World Cup Cricket Results Include A Betting Surprise - 03-16-07
March 16 - The 2007 cricket World Cup is underway and host nation the West Indies got off to a flyer beating Pakistan in the opening game of the tournament. But the biggest betting result so far was yesterday when minnows Ireland held Zimbabwe to a tie.

Zimbabwe's only chance of winning games these days seems to be if the other team chooses to forfeit the game as a form of political protest, as was the case in the previous World Cup held in Africa. Ireland's unheralded team came close to pulling off a surprise win in the most exciting (and competitive) game to date.
Ladbrokes.com has the latest odds for the World Cup winner, and Australia still top the boards at 2/1. Their destruction of Scotland in their opening game didn't really prove anything and we await a real challenge for the defending champions before we can judge their chances of repeating.
A number of the early games have been complete mismatches such as yesterday's game between Bermuda and Sri Lanka, where the latter won by 243 runs!
The money has come for South Africa, the team ranked number 1 in the latest world one-day rankings, and they are now 5/1. Right behind them are the West Indies at 6/1.
We would be surprised to see any of the other teams winning this tournament, although New Zealand offer good betting value at the current odds of 9/1.
