June 5 - Next week millions of sports bettors will scour World Cup odds to find the next great World Cup upset. There will be surprise results in the 2006 World Cup, you can bet on that, and to get you in the mood we look back at the five biggest World Cup upsets in the tournament's storied history.
NUMBER 5: Cameroon 1 Argentina 0, Italy 1990
Argentina have suffered two humiliating upsets as defending champions. In 1982 they were beaten by an unheralded Beligum team (all teams from Belgium are unheralded) but when they lost to Cameroon it was a truly stunning upset. Cameroon were reduced to nine men as they spent most of the game mugging unwitting Argentinians who strayed into their half, but the team from Africa still won 1-0.
Cameroon's efforts in this soccer World Cup proved a turning point for African football, and teams from Africa since 1990 are no longer viewed as no-hopers in World Cup odds.
NUMBER 4: Senegal 1 France 0, South Korea 2002
The 2002 World Cup saw more betting upsets than any other soccer tournament. Not only did the USA brush aside Portugal, scoring 3 goals in the first half on their way to a famous win, but Senegal opened the tournament by beating the defending champions France. The French were favored by many football handicappers to repeat their 1998 World Cup victory but they were outplayed by the Senegalese.
NUMBER 3: North Korea 1 Italy 0, England 1966
When Italy lost this game the entire country came to a standstill, but they mobilized quickly to jeer at the players upon their return and pelt them with rotten fruit. North Korea's part-timers somehow managed to beat the vaunted Italian team and ensure that they were eliminated from the competition altogether.
NUMBER 2: South Korea 2 Italy 1, South Korea 2002
This was a spectacular betting upset, not only because the odds suggested that Italy couldn't lose but also because it was a quarter-final game with plenty on the line. The South Koreans scored the winner thanks to a golden goal in extra time and they even missed a penalty earlier - cheeky!
NUMBER 1: USA 1 England 0, Brazil 1950
This has to go down as the biggest upset in the history of soccer. The USA didn't even play soccer at the time, but managed to cobble together eleven amateur dudes who were conned into thinking they were going to Rio for spring break. England were humiliated in a game they expected to win by several goals. the USA's victory failed to make an impression back in the States, maybe because the team was swatted aside in their other games.
