June 1 - The 2006 World Cup will be the biggest sports betting event of all time, even bigger than the Superbowl and March Madness. Winning the World Cup would lead to pandemonium in every country with the exception of the USA, but that doesn't matter because they have no chance of winning. In fact, no country that hasn't won before will win this time around, at least not according to World Cup odds.
Part of the fun of betting on the World Cup is that there are so many different outcomes that you can bet on. One betting market is for whether or not there will be a new winner of the World Cup, that is to say a country that has never won the tournament in the past.
The current World Cup soccer odds for 'Will there be a new winner?' has No at 3/13 with Yes at 3/1.
The latest betting to win the World Cup tells its own story. Brazil (5 time winners), Germany, England, Argentina, Italy, and Holland are the top teams in the betting, and all of them have won the World Cup previously.
There are teams that could win the World Cup and that are not on this list: Sweden, Czech Republic, and Spain but realistically they are big longshots. If a new team won the World Cup it would qualify as a major betting upset.
And what of the USA, couldn't they win with their laughable FIFA world ranking and strong quarter-final showing in 2002? The USA cannot get out of the Group stage this year, and we'd be surprised to see them win a single game. They are no match for Italy, the Czech Republic, and even Ghana could beat them. Our prediction: they finish last and set 'soccer' back another 5 years in a country that on the whole really couldn't care less (unless you count all the illegal immigrants, and America is loathe to count them).
