June 24 - Saturday's soccer World Cup action saw one betting upset, one near upset of the tournament, and one goal of the tournament - all in the same game! The Argentina vs Mexico clash dwarfed the early game between hosts Germany and Sweden as against all odds the Mexicans made a game of it.
The World Cup odds for this one suggested a cakewalk for Argentina, who have an abundance of talent and seemed capable of winning the whole competition. But Mexico scored first and then matched them stride for stride as the regular time confrontation finished in a 1-1 draw.
That betting result was a shock to World Cup prognosticators and punters alike. Mexico were denied outright victory, however, by a goal of brilliance. It's not simply the best goal of the 2006 World Cup but one of the best goals scored in any World Cup, and it came in extra time no less.
Maxi Rodriguez's strike settled matters 2-1 in favor of Argentina, who must now face Germany in a game that the online sportsbooks might struggle with in terms of setting the correct odds. Germany are the hosts and have looked good but this is the best team they will have faced. The betting will probably be very tight for this one.
In the first game Germany scored twice early and Sweden had a man sent off. That ended matters as a contest, although Sweden did earn a second half penalty, but missed that as well. They were bundled out of the competition 2-0, and never got going at this World Cup. Germany are building up momentum at the right time. There's a word for this...ah yes, "blitzkrieg".
