World Cup Soccer Squad Shock In England - 06-03-06

June 3 - Squads were announced yesterday for the Soccer World Cup, which kicks off in Germany next week, and the biggest shock came with the announcement of England's squad. Sportsbooks expect World Cup 2006 betting to increase in the lead up to the opening game, and it will be interesting to see if England's odds to win continue to fluctuate.

World Cup odds on the favorites Brazil have been fairly flat in trading but England's odds are comparatively volatile, driven by a huge number of fans who like to bet but countered by the sobering realization that their chances of winning are vastly inflated.

The England squad for the World Cup seems to highlight this with manager Eriksson clutching at straws with the shock inclusion of Theo Walcott, and to a lesser extent Lennon and Downing.

Walcott is 17 and cannot make the first team at club level. He plays for Arsenal, well their reserves to be accurate, yet he is apparently England's next best option up front with the injury to Rooney.

Sven has never seen Walcott play in a live game, and only watched him briefly on tape but Arsenal manager Wegner raves about his ability, so he'll be going to Germany. If Wegner is such a big fan why did the youngster not get on the pitch for the European Cup final? If Walcott is ready to beat Brazil why has he never been deemed ready to beat Charlton Athletic in the Premiership?

The sad truth for England is that without Rooney, or a even a below-par Rooney, they cannot come close to winning. They have Owen (out of form and not the force he was when he burst on the international scene), Crouch (useless), and a player no-one including the coach has ever seen play.

The kid will need to be Pele in order for this gamble to work.
