WSOP News - Our Latest Updates From Vegas - 08-05-06
August 5 - The latest 2006 WSOP news is that only 324 players remain and they include Daniel Negreanu and Joseph Hachem, the defending World Series Of Poker champion. The chip leader is Alex Balandin currently with 950,000 chips.
Hoyt Corkins has just been eliminated in 364th spot in the mammoth event and he will earn $34,636 for that effort.
Former world poker champion and noted poker author Tom McEvoy was another high-profile elimination earlier today.
The big story at the main event is the inspired play of Hachem who refuses to hand over his title as world champion without a dogged fight. The 2005 Main Event winner has already outlasted 8450 players, and he still has plenty of chips in front of him. The latest count we have puts him at 215,000 chips.
The biggest name left in the tournament is Daniel Negreanu. The diminutive Canadian has 165,000 chips and he receives plenty of respect at his table. In a hand we witnessed a few minutes ago a player laid down 99 to him after he went all-in from the big blind. Daniel flipped over KK and acknowledged a solid call by his opponent.
Other big names still in it include Allen Cunningham, Humberto Brenes, and Annie Duke.
