The Preakness Stakes at Pimlico is the second leg of horse racing's legendary
Triple Crown, and as such it generates a tremendous amount of betting interest.
The race always features the horse that has captured the imagination of
America's horseracing fans, namely the horse that won the Kentucky Derby.
However, let's get one thing straight: the horse that wins the Kentucky Derby
is by no means the best three-year-old in the country. Sometimes the horse that
wins the Run For The Roses just got very lucky, usually because of a perfect
trip, and really has very little chance of replicating that performance again
ever.
Giacomo and Monarchos were horses of that ilk that had one magical race where
everything fell into place, and one could also argue that Funny Cide was no
match for Empire Maker in terms of talent once the latter was fit and back to
his best (in the Belmont).
The Preakness Stakes is however far easier to handicap than the Kentucky
Derby and so the odds for the race generally pan out a lot better. Horses that
are favored in the betting perform well in the Preakness because the field size
is smaller, the track condition is easy to discern, and one does have a good
line of form through the Kentucky Derby if it was a truly run race since many of
those horses resume battle in Maryland following the first leg in Kentucky.
Horses like Smarty Jones, Real Quiet, War Emblem, Funny Cide, and Charismatic
all kept their Triple Crown hopes alive, albeit fleetingly, by winning the
Preakness with most of the betting action on them. They also won well enough
here to give the nation false hope that there could be a new Affirmed on the
horizon, but alas 30 years later it still has not happened, yet!
When it comes time to bet on the Preakness Stakes keep in mind that the
Pimlico racetrack is notorious for favoring speed horses, and it can also have a
substantial track bias that generally favors horses that hug the rail. So look
at post positions and horses with early speed when you decide which horses to
bet on in the big race.
